I’m considering buying a Mac with 8 GB of unified memory, but I’m worried it might not be enough anymore. I mostly browse with multiple tabs open, use office apps, stream videos and occasionally edit photos. Is 8 GB still fine for everyday use or should I pay extra for 16 GB?
I’ve got an 8 GB Mac and honestly it handles that kind of stuff without any drama. Safari, Office, YouTube, email, some Photos edits, all pretty normal. I only really notice the limits when I start throwing heavier apps into the mix.
I’d mostly think about how long you plan to keep it. You can’t upgrade the unified memory later, so if the 16 GB model isn’t a huge jump in price, I’d probably just get that and forget about it. Having the extra headroom is nice if you end up doing more with it later.
I’m on an M1 MacBook Air with 8 GB and do translation work on it pretty much every day. Usually it’s a bunch of browser tabs, Docs, Word, PDFs and reference sites all open at once. Never really had an issue with 8 GB for that kind of work. For translating and writing, it’s been plenty.
I do some Lightroom stuff on mine and 16 GB has been fine. Cropping, adjustments, the occasional RAW edit, nothing crazy. If you’re talking about huge RAW batches and lots of exports, that’s where I’d start wanting more memory.
I work in motion design, so I’m probably a bad comparison here.
I’m usually in After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator at the same time, plus a browser, and 8 GB would drive me nuts. I’d go 24 GB or more for my setup. For browsing and Office, though, that’s a totally different story.
If you already have a Mac, open Activity Monitor and watch Memory Pressure while you’re doing your normal stuff. Mine usually stays green. If you’re seeing yellow or red regularly, especially with the apps you actually use, that’s a better sign you need more memory than just looking at the GB number.
I went from 8 GB to 16 GB on my last Mac. The biggest difference was just being able to leave more stuff open without thinking about it. I’d be less worried about 8 GB if you replace Macs every few years. Personally, if I was buying one to keep for 5+ years, I’d pay for 16 GB.
