Hi everyone. I’m a newcomer here and wanted to ask is there a way to clear fb messenger cache on iphone?
So basically I tried to update my phone yesterday but it kept saying I didn’t have enough storage. I started going through my apps to see what’s eating up all the space and that’s when I noticed messenger was taking up almost 4 gigs. I don’t even have that many chats!
I read somewhere that on iphone the only way to clear an app’s cache is to offload or delete it, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s true for messenger specifically.
Thanks in advance.
Hi, soo… yeah that’s basically it for iPhone unfortunately. Your best bet is to just offload the app, it keeps your data but clears the junk. Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messenger > Offload App. Should free up a good chunk of that space
Apple doesn’t really give apps a built in “clear cache” button the way Android does, so when people search for how to clear messenger cache on iphone, the answer usually comes down to either offloading or reinstalling the app.
Offloading is the safer option because it removes the app itself and a lot of temporary files, but keeps your chats, login info, and documents. Reinstalling Messenger usually clears even more space because it wipes the entire app container and downloads a fresh copy.
You can also try a few smaller things before that:
• delete large attachments or old video-heavy chats inside Messenger
• remove downloaded photos/videos from conversations
• clear Safari cache too if you use Messenger links a lot
This guide explains the iPhone cache situation pretty well too: https://news.macgasm.net/tips/clear-iphone-cache
Honestly though, 4 GB for Messenger isn’t that unusual. A lot of it comes from cached photos, videos, stickers, voice messages, and temporary files that build up over time even when your visible chats don’t look huge.
before you delete or reinstall Messenger, make sure you remember your login details and have backup codes enabled if you use two-factor authentication. Most chats come back automatically after login, but people sometimes get locked out because they forgot their password or lost access to SMS verification.
@ iDeviceFan_73 THANKS! I tried that already and it definitely helped, but I still don’t have enough free space for the update unfortunately
I checked my storage again and turns out my gallery is also a problem. I have years of photos/videos on this phone and I honestly didn’t realize how much space they were taking up. Messenger was just the first thing that caught my attention because almost 4 GB sounded insane to me lol.
I’ll probably go through my videos next and clear the Recently Deleted folder too because I completely forgot that still takes up storage on iPhone.
Ahhh okay, yeah then Messenger was probably just the thing that made you notice the storage issue
If you have a huge gallery, that’s usually where most of the space disappears on iPhone.
A few things besides Messenger cleanup that usually help pretty fast:
-
Clear the Recently Deleted album after deleting photos/videos
-
Check Photos > Albums > Media Types and look for large videos first
-
Remove downloaded Spotify/Netflix/YouTube content because those apps can quietly store several GB offline
-
Offload apps you rarely use from iPhone Storage settings
-
Check the Files app too because old downloads/PDFs/video files pile up there surprisingly often
-
Enable “Optimize iPhone Storage” in iCloud Photos if you use iCloud
You can also use cleanup apps like Clever Cleaner if you want something faster for duplicates, screenshots, similar photos, and large videos. Manually sorting years of media on iPhone can take forever otherwise lol.
Also keep in mind iOS updates sometimes need extra temporary free space during installation, so the phone may ask for more storage than the update size itself.
Phew… I think that’s it. Fingers-crossed my phone will update now. Thanks everyone for the advice.
