My AirPods keep connecting to the wrong Apple device. For example, I’ll be using them with my iPhone, but they suddenly switch to my nearby iPad or Mac even when I’m not actively using it. I like automatic switching in theory, but lately it has become more annoying than helpful. Is there a way to stop the random switching without disabling the feature completely?
Yeah, you don’t have to turn it off everywhere. On the device that keeps grabbing them, go into the AirPods settings and change Connect to This iPhone/iPad/Mac to When Last Connected to This [device].
I changed that on my Mac since it kept taking over while I was listening on my phone. After that, it stopped happening for me without changing the setting on my iPhone.
Ohh, I didn’t realize you could set that per device. I thought it was basically all or nothing. Gonna change it on the Mac first since that’s the one doing it most often.
I’d also check the iPad when it happens. If something starts playing there, that can trigger the automatic handoff. Apple has a pretty good explanation of the switching here, including the per-device setting. Might be worth a quick look before changing a bunch of stuff.
Make sure the iPhone, iPad and Mac are up to date too. Automatic switching requires supported software, and the devices should be signed into the same Apple Account. I’d check those basics before resetting anything!!
Just checked and my Mac was still behind on updates, while my iPhone and iPad were already up to date. I completely missed the Mac update. I’ll update it and see if the weird switching comes back.
Yep, I wouldn’t reset the AirPods just for this. If the connection setting still isn’t being respected after the update, then I’d remove the AirPods from the device and pair them again. That’s more of a troubleshooting step if the normal setup isn’t behaving right.
Updated the Mac and left it on When Last Connected. So far it hasn’t jumped over again. I’ll leave the iPad on automatic for now and see how it behaves, sooo ty!
